Unaustralia Day

I am absolutely disgusted with this country right now. I've just seen footage of a few thousand urban rednecks — many in their teens — waving Australian flags as they assaulted people of Middle-Eastern appearance in Cronulla. They shouted "Aussie Aussie Aussie!" as they threw bricks at ambulances and attacked police.

What the hell is going on? Where are all these white Australian racists coming from? Now I've seen all the letters in the newspapers and heard talkback radio, but I always thought that was just a vocal minority. These people were so young. And they waved flags. They wrote "AUSSIE PRIDE" in the sand.

What is wrong with this country? Why is xenophobia so widespread in 2005? White people have killed more people than Al-Qaeda, so why all the hate toward people with skin a little darker than your average Bruce or Sheila? I want to blame someone. It'd be nice to blame the government. Or the media. Surely they're all just misinformed, right? I'm in tears right now... which is like seeing a flying pig. I really don't know what to think.

i'm not crying, but i feel the same.
seeing and reading about things like this brings on both a feeling of absolute disgust and a sort of heavy sunken feeling in my chest.
it is so sad to see people have so much conviction about ideas that are so small-minded and hateful. what is wrong with these people!

I am kind of scared to turn on the TV news. I'm not sure I want to see it, but yeah, I read about it, and I'm so shocked. I thought they were a minority too, it's scary.

A couple of surf lifesavers were assaulted recently, allegedly by youths of Lebanese origin. A rally/meeting was organised to discuss safety for volunteers, but it apparently turned into "these people come here and..." very quickly.

I just wish Australians could be more open minded... it's not just racism, it's sexism and homophobia. It's a shame that "Aussie pride" has degraded to yelling racist slogans, endorsing this so-called white Australia (One Nation...), and having a negative image of women associated with it, the whole scantilly clad woman fetching beers for her beer-gut husband. This, along with a long line of intolerance for homosexuals, is just disgusting.

I quite frankly don't want to be associated with these stereotypes that are quickly becoming a reality.

I'm an American, and I decided to check the usual suspects (right wing idiots) web sites, and I usually found a lot more Muslim hatred than an accurate view of the events warranted.

I try to constantly remind people online that if you think Rupert Murdoch has an unhealthy influence on America through Fox news, then you'd be shocked at how Australia is the puppet of a whole slew of right wing wackos.

While I'm an american, I have lots of family living in Australia so I've been trying to keep up with this story. From what I've read, this violence isn't about racism as it about people getting sick of being threatened and harassed by muslims.

I'm sure a little bit of racism has crept into this muck but it's mostly anger at muslims who are coming into the area and threatening and assaulting the local resident's. If the local officals hadn't been so worried about politcal correctness , they could have cracked down on these violent muslims and kept the situation from escalating to this point.

People like you are the reason this shit boiled over in the first place. You judge the situation in terms of race and then wonder why ethnic minorities feel isolated and threatened. This issue (like most others) has nothing to do with race. A lot of white people commit crimes but you don't see anti-caucasian marches and riots. Criminals come in all shapes, sizes, races, colours and creeds. It is our constitutional duty in Australia — as it is in your fine bastion of liberty and democracy — to view them all equally.

For your information, the Lebanese youths hunted down and beaten were born here. They weren't "coming into the area and threatening and assaulting the local resident's (sic)". This country is just as muchtheirs as it is ours, regardless of what closet rednecks like yourself believe.

Since when is Islam a race? I never said that it was race that was the motivating factor. These riot's where started by MUSLIM gangs terrorizing and assaulting the locals. Since the cops weren't doing anything to stop it, they had to take matters into their own hands. If anyone is crying racism it's you and your fellow lefties.

As to the matter of the lebanese youth who were born in Australia, it would be a mistake to consider them Australian's. I'm sure you'll consider me a racist for saying this, but Muslims do not view themselves as immigrants. They view themselves as colonist's and have no intention of assimilating into what they believe to be a heathen culture.

Label me a right wing nutjob, but don't come crying to me when your wives, sisters, and mothers have to cover themselves so that they wont be raped and killed by muslim youths. Don't cry to me when gays and lesbian's are stoned to death by muslim mobs. When Hindu's, Jew's, and Christians are beaten and killed for being unbelivers, I don't want to hear your whining. You know nothing of Islam and how terrible and evil it is. But you keep on with your multi-cultral fantasy and you'll find out for yourself soon enough.

I have to disagree with you on this one, mate. This race riot is fuelled by the media in Australia, who run 'news stories' about how intolerant Muslim youth is towards white people. These 'news stories' are heavily edited, losing all context and meaning, and end up portraying these kids as being racist, unwilling to amalgamate with Australian society, and so on.

I work in a university in Melbourne, and I know an enormous number of Islamic people, as well as Arabs of non-Islamic faith, who are members of the university's Arabic Society. They are exactly the same as anyone else. Some of them are really lovely people. Some of them are boring as hell. A few of them are arseholes.

I have to point out here that the ratio of nice people to arseholes is a lot more favourable than in the white-dominated beer club, or the football club, or the barbeque club.

What I am trying to point out is that it is absolutely ludicrous, ignorant, and predjudiced to make generalisations about an entire race of people. There are idiots of every colour, nationality, and relgion. There are sexist Aussie males who rape and bash women. There are Christians who bomb entire cities of innocent women and children to death.

The entire world is a fucked-up place. And once you (Americans/racists/Christians) are finished killing all the Arabs or Muslims, who will you point at next? Eventually there'll only be you left, and then you'll have to kill each other based on something other than race, religion, or nationality. You'll have to base it on the individual, which is what you could have done in the first place.

Australia is supposed to be a "multicultural society", but when the people who are "multicultural" aren't accepted, I don't see how this could be true. If the news stopped trying to entertain people and build fear (especially of terrorism) rather than being a purely informative and unbiased source of information (which will never happen) then maybe bullshit like this wouldn't happen. I am just really pissed off with all these people who think they are doing the right thing, when really they are sinking as low as terrorists and such, they are hurting innocent people.
